BRINGING CALM TO CHOAS: How Symmetry Can Elevate Your Eclectic Space

Mixing and matching different styles and colors throughout an eclectic design can be a great way to create a space that is unique and personal. However, it can also be difficult to create a sense of calm in a space that is so visually busy.

INTRODUCING SYMMETRY

One way to bring calm to an eclectic design is to use symmetry. Symmetry is the balanced arrangement of elements on either side of a central axis. It can be used in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Placing furniture in pairs: This is a classic way to create symmetry in a room. For example, you could place a pair of armchairs on either side of a fireplace or a pair of lamps on a coffee table.

  • Hanging artwork in a grid: A grid arrangement is another simple way to create symmetry. You could hang a group of framed photos or prints in a grid on a wall.

  • Using symmetrical patterns: Symmetrical patterns can be used on rugs, pillows, and other textiles. For example, you could use a rug with a symmetrical pattern to anchor a room or add pillows with a symmetrical pattern to a sofa.

Using symmetry can help to create a sense of order and balance in an eclectic space. It can also help to draw the eye to certain focal points in the room.

HOW TO USE SYMMETRY IN YOUR ECLECTIC DESIGN

Here are a few tips for using symmetry in your eclectic design:

  • Start small. You don't have to go overboard with symmetry. Try adding just a few symmetrical elements to your space to see how it feels.

  • Use balance. Don't feel like you have to make everything perfectly symmetrical; If you do, you will lose the eclectic feel of the space. Just a little bit of asymmetry can add the perfect touch of interest to your design.

  • Mix and match. You can use symmetry with different styles and colors. For example, you could pair a pair of traditional lamps with a pair of modern candlesticks. Don’t be afraid to mix and match when it comes to price point - this mix of high and low-end pieces makes the space approachable and lived in.

  • Have fun! Experiment with different ways to use symmetry in your space. The most important thing is to create a space that you love.

EXAMPLES OF SYMMETRICAL ELEMENTS IN ECLECTIC DESIGN

Here are a few examples of symmetrical elements that you can use in your eclectic design:

  • Pillows: Pillows are a great way to add symmetry to a sofa or bed. You could use a pair of pillows with the same pattern or fabric.

  • Candlesticks: Candlesticks add a touch of elegance to any space. You could use a pair of candlesticks on a coffee table, mantel, or dining table.

  • Lamps: Lamps are a functional and stylish way to add light to a room. You could use a pair of lamps on a coffee table, nightstand, or console table.

SYMMETRY IS NOT THE ONLY WAY!

I would also like to add that symmetry is not the only way to create a calm and serene space. Other ways to achieve this include:

  • Using natural materials. Natural materials like wood, stone, and linen can help create a sense of calm and peace. Consider using these materials in your furniture, flooring, and decor.

  • Keeping the color palette simple. A simple color palette can help to create a sense of calm and tranquility. Try using a limited number of colors in your space.

  • Adding plants. Plants add life and beauty to any space. They can also help to improve air quality and reduce stress.

  • Creating a clutter-free environment. Clutter can be visually overwhelming and stressful. Try to keep your space clean and clutter-free to create a more calming environment.

Below are a few examples of eclectic spaces that have symmetrical elements but rely heavily on the natural materials, simple color palette, and clutter free environment.
